Everyone in Finland knows what a Himmeli is. In fact most of Northern and Eastern Europe has their version of these incredibly beautiful and unassuming mobiles.
In Finland they were made from rye straw and hung up at Christmas time and often left hanging for the rest of the year. There are hundreds of different variations on traditional Himmeli and they can be made huge or very small, depending on the material you use and the time you want to spend on making them.
I have been making then using straw, cow parsley and latterly glass and metal tubing.
Himmeli making is a meditative and geometrical craft. I think it would have a huge potential as an educational tool in mathematics. However, I am not a mathematician and I absolutely love the creative process of making these beautiful mobiles.
